Abu al-A'war al-Sulami

Abu al-A'war Amr ibn Sufyan ibn Abd Shams al-Sulami was a companion of Prophet Muhammad and a prominent military commander. He fought against the Muslims at the Battle of Hunayn but later converted to Islam. He participated in the conquest of Syria and fought at the Battle of Yarmouk. He commanded the Arab navy against the Byzantines, achieving victory at the Battle of the Masts in 654. He served as governor of Jordan under Caliph Uthman and later Mu'awiya. His troops destroyed the Colossus of Rhodes. He was one of Mu'awiya's senior lieutenants and served as a negotiator at the Battle of Siffin.
