He accepted Islam on the day of the Conquest of Mecca (Fathu Makkah). He was a poet of his time. He was the husband of Subai'ah bint al-Harith al-Aslamiyyah, a female companion known for her story about the waiting period ('iddah) for a pregnant widow. According to historian al-Baghawi, he lived in Kufa, while others state that he remained in Mecca until his death.
