Altamash

Altamash is a Turkish name meaning 'Maintainer of the Kingdom'. It is historically associated with Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish (also spelled Altamash), the third ruler of the Delhi Sultanate who reigned from 1211 to 1236 AD. He is considered the effective founder of the Delhi Sultanate and was the first Muslim sovereign to rule from Delhi. He consolidated Muslim rule in northern India, introduced the silver 'tanka' and copper 'jital' coins, and set up the Iqta system of administration. The name carries connotations of leadership, strength, and the ability to establish and maintain a powerful state. It is a classic name in South Asian Muslim history.
