He was born in 581 CE in Mecca to the noble family of Banu Adi of the Quraish tribe. Initially a fierce opponent of Islam, he accepted Islam after being moved by Quranic verses at his sister's house. His conversion gave strength to the Muslim community. He was known for his justice, administrative genius, and simple living. He established the Islamic calendar, organized the state into provinces, and expanded the Islamic empire to include Persia, Syria, and Egypt. He was martyred in 644 CE by a Persian slave.
